Frequently Asked Questions

What will happen on my first visit?

Please bring a copy of your completed New Patient Form.  A thorough history and focused physical exam will be done by Dr. Armstrong in addition to an initial treatment.

How do I prepare for an acupuncture treatment?

Wear loose clothing.Do not eat an unusually large meal, drink alcohol, or exercise vigorously for at least 6 hours before and after treatment.  Avoid extremes.

How will I feel following an acupuncture treatment?

Responses to acupuncture can be varied and symptoms may stay the same, improve, or transiently worsen.   Symptoms usually improve in time, so do not get discouraged with transient worsening.  Transient worsening usually lasts less than 24 hours, indicating that your chi has been affected and you are headed for improvement.

How often will I need treatments?

This depends on the complexity and duration of the illness and one’s general state of health.  For acute or chronic problems, cumulative benefit comes from treatments over several weeks.  For individuals with no significant health problems, acupuncture visits prove helpful at least once a season (4-5 times yearly).

Is acupuncture covered by insurance?

Acupuncture is not covered by most health plans.  We do not file claims but provide patients with an invoice and proper documentation to submit to their insurance plan.  One notable  exception is (University of Kentucky) UK HMO, in which patients only need to contribute a $15 copay and can self refer.

Do I have to believe in acupuncture or chi for it to work?

No.  Acupuncture will work, regardless of beliefs.  One can be assured of this after witnessing dramatic effects even in animals (who presumably know nothing of acupuncture or chi!).
